The gold rush is long over, but the stories from that era remain. One of the most beguiling and romantic tales is that of Jacob Waltz, a prospector from Germany who spent decades searching for gold, only to end up old, penniless, and ill. On his last legs, Waltz made one final foray into the mountains. This time, he returned near death but ecstatic, telling everyone he had finally made his fortunes. The old prospector spoke of a mine worth untold millions, where you could literally scrape the gold off the walls with a spoon. Unfortunately, Jacob took to the bed and never recovered, leaving only deathbed directions and a hastily sketched map. In the decades since, thousands have searched for what is now known as the Lost Dutchman Mine, but its whereabouts remain unknown.
